With regard to their design, compression resistance and testing, fire extinguishers must comply with the standards laid down in ÖNORM EN 3-3. Fire extinguishers need to be checked at least every second calendar year, and the place where they are stored has to bear the marking “area for fire-fighting equipment”. It is forbidden to store certain extinguishing substances in small, narrow, deep or poorly ventilated rooms. Practical fire-fighting exercises with fire extinguishers are preferable to any instructions. Empty fire extinguishers have to be refilled immediately and can only then be hung back on walls again.
