In order to be able to define accurately the risk potential of chemicals or preparations, Annex B of the Regulation on Chemicals (Chemikalienverordnung, ChemV) defines the criteria for assessing risks by means of hazard symbols and (currently 65) risk phrases (R-statements). The R phrases in combination with danger symbols give highly detailed information on the risks of substances. Under the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) the R phrases are replaced by H (hazard) statements. See also Labelling of Work Substances.
