Under the Rest Periods Act (Arbeitsruhegesetz, ARG) staff are entitled to week(end) and holiday rest periods. Exemptions may be granted by way of legislation, regulations, collective agreements or decrees. Exemptions also apply to certain categories of employees (i.e. apprentices, pregnant women). The Rest Periods Act should not be confused with the Working Hours Act ( Arbeitszeit-gesetz, AZG) which lays down working hours and breaks.
