Within the meaning of the Labour Protection Act (ArbeitnehmerInnenschutzgesetz, ASchG) stairs must have a sufficiently large, plane, skid-proof and load-bearing step area. Stairs with more than four steps have to be fitted with a handrail. They have to be adequately illuminated so that the top and the bottom step are clearly visible. Objects may not be deposited or stored on stairs.
