Substitution of Work Substances

Hazardous work materials may not be used if the same outcome can be achieved by substituting these with less dangerous or non-dangerous substances and if the associated input (in terms of costs and work) is acceptable. Such an input assessment (which has to be made in the course of a risk assessment at work pursuant to Sections 4 and 5, and Section 41 respectively (for work substances) of the Labour Protection Act (ArbeitnehmerInnenschutzgesetz, ASchG) is not permissible in the event of carcinogenic or mutagenic substances as well as substances toxic as regards reproduction and biological working agents of categories 2, 3 and 4. In these cases, a substitution with other available substances is indicated at all costs (in the literal sense of the phrase).
