The “Essential Safety Requirements” (i.e. in Annex One of the Machinery Safety Regulation, MSV) of 2010 contained in manufacturers’ instructions pursuant to Article 95 of the EC Treaty (CE Regulations) define general protection goals which are primarily addressed to manufacturers of products (i.e. machines). Harmonised standards are helpful in order to reach these protection goals, as compliance with these implies that the essential safety requirements have been met. Compliance with harmonised standards is, however, not mandatory; the marking affixed to a machine testifies to its compliance with all relevant essential safety requirements.
