A distinction is made between primary, secondary and constructional protective measures. Primary protective measures consist of the substitution of work substances, inerting, sealing (i.e. of containers), limitation of concentration and ventilation. Secondary protective measures comprise the zoning of explosion-risk areas (delineation of zones) and, depending on their classification, the avoidance of sources of ignition. Design and constructional protective measures include explosion pressure relief, explosion suppression, explosion proof construction and anti-explosive decoupling technology.
