In the selection of work equipment for lifting loads or persons, as well as accessories, slings and their components, the following factors are to be taken into consideration:

• The type and mass of the loads to be lifted (bags, pallets, people, etc.)
• Grip and anchorage points as well as attachment tackle
• Place of installation and properties of the ground
• Weather conditions
• Type of load attachment and picking up method

If persons are to be transported in work baskets, specific requirements relating to the use and characteristics of lifting equipment (i.e. cranes or forklift trucks) as well as the working cage (carrier) have to be satisfied. See also Lifting Gear.
