The term (artificial) room lighting has to be distinguished from (natural) light. Workrooms and workplaces have to be equipped with adequate artificial lighting for the protection of workers' safety and health in line with the use to which they are put. In designing the lighting, care should be taken to avoid high luminance, differences in light intensities, glare, flickering and stroboscopic effects. In rooms, the light intensity must correspond to at least 100 lux, and on traffic routes at least 30 lux. The recommended standard value for office space is 500 lux, for machine work such as turning and milling it is 300 lux. See also Required Lighting.
