When working with machining equipment, such as saws or milling devices, the general rule has to be observed that all required protective Equipment has been installed and must be fully operational. Wherever it appears necessary, workers must have received all safety instructions and have acquired all practical skills for handling such equipment; in addition they have to use all required auxiliary devices (i.e. pushing rods) and wear personal protective Equipment (i.e. hearing protectors). In addition to the general requirements, the Regulation relating to Work Equipment (Arbeitsmittelverordnung, AM-VO) contains special requirements for saws, planes and milling devices, grinding machines as well as pressing and cutting tools.
