The REACH Regulation (EC 1907/2006) specifies the criteria for the registration, evaluation, authorization as well as restrictions imposed on chemicals and preparations. All substances of which one tonne or larger quantities are produced annually by a single manufacturer must be registered, and in addition their hazard classification, labelling and guidelines for safe handling must be provided. These data have to be accessible to the general public. When 10 tons or higher quantities of a substance are produced, a substance safety report has to be drawn up. Such a report has to contain the safety assessment of the substance, especially harmful effects on human health, and in case of hazardous substances, an exposure assessment and an exposure estimation as well as a description of the risks posed by the substance.
