Visual Display Terminal Work

Visual display terminal workstations have to be designed in a way that assures sufficient space for changing working postures and allows free movements. Suitable lighting must be provided, reflections and flare effects (see also Positioning of Display Screens) are to be avoided. If employees continuously work on an average more than two hours or a total of more than three hours per day with VDUs, the following rules have to be observed:
  • After 50 minutes of work at VDU workstations, a break of at least ten minutes must be made or an alternative activity carried out.
  • Employees are entitled to eye examinations and, if necessary, glasses or contact lenses have to be provided at the employer’s expense.
